Purpose and Fundamentals of Wastewater Treatment

This course appropriately begins with the water cycle. It is an overview of the wastewater treatment process, beginning to end. This gives the individual the concepts of the entirety and impact of the work done in treatment plants.

The Lagoon Operators Committee invites you to an upcoming gathering designed to foster collaboration, connection, and knowledge-sharing among lagoon system professionals. This special event will include a facility tour, committee meeting, and lunch — offering a valuable opportunity to engage with peers from across the industry.

In alignment with the committee’s mission to bring together wastewater lagoon professionals, regulators, engineers, and manufacturer representatives to share ideas and solve problems related to lagoons, this meeting will focus on discussing current challenges, highlighting innovative solutions, and providing updates on lagoon-related initiatives throughout the state.

The 2026 MWEA Leadership Retreat is an opportunity for current and future MWEA leaders to connect with other leaders, develop leadership skills, and foster meaningful alignment with the MWEA mission & vision. You won't want to miss it!  

The 2026 retreat will be held Tuesday July 28th  and Wednesday, July 29th at the Four Points by Sheraton Detroit Novi. It will start with a networking lunch on the 28th, followed by an invigorating agenda focused on personal development and improvement of various leadership skills in the afternoon and an evening of food, fun & networking. Day two will start with breakfast, more focus on leadership skills and will end with lunch. It is an invitation only event intended for Committee Chairs & Vice Chairs, Board members, Instructors, Staff and a few additional guests who have expressed interest in organizational leadership.

Attendance at the annual Leadership Retreat is an expectation for our committee and organizational leaders. It is important for each committee to be represented. There is no cost to attend, however registration is required. NOTE: Please do NOT call the hotel regarding reservations.  MWEA will submit the rooming list and handle all reservations.  Additional details and room confirmation numbers will be sent prior to event. WHEN: Thursday, July 30, 2026 from 1:45pm to 7pm | Mixer and cornhole tournament to follow (Nancy Whiskey Pub).

WHAT: Plant tour at Conner Creek CSO from 1:45pm - 4pm, with a mixer and cornhole tournament to follow from 4pm - 7pm. 

You may choose to attend just the tour, just the mixer & cornhole tournament or both. If you do not see the tour option available when you register, that means we have reached capacity for the tour. Please email swicks@mi-wea.org to be added to a waitlist, as some people do cancel.


TOUR Address: GLWA Conner Creek CSO Facility, 11900 Freud St. Detroit, MI 48215


PPE Requirements: Hard-toed boots, hard hat and safety vest required. Gloves and safety glasses are recommended.
Pre-Tour Guidelines & Requirement: Parking is extremely limited at the facility. Please park at he nearby Dollar Tree and strip mall at 13240 E. Jefferson Ave, Detroit, MI 48215. Designated drivers will pick up groups and drop them off at Conner Creek Facility.
