The City of Lansing is seeking to fill the Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent position in one of the largest wastewater facilities in Michigan that is run with state-of-the art technology. Annual Salary: $79,697.53-$107,294.76
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Manages, coordinates and supervises the Wastewater Treatment Plant and collection systems, monitors operations and directs changes when necessary, which requires interpretation of written and verbal information, talking in person and over the telephone.
- Receives and responds in a respectful and culturally competent manner to complaints by citizens and regulatory agencies by listening in person and over the telephone and communicating information verbally and consistent with departmental policies and procedures.
- Attends and conducts a wide range of public relations programs and answers questions from members of the public and other parties in a respectful and culturally competent manner.
- Performs a wide range of personnel management functions in a fair and consistent manner including evaluating employees, interviewing job applicants and discussing with the supervisory staff issues involving promotion, reassignment, discipline and termination of employees.
- Reviews maintenance activities and sets priorities, by reading, observing, listening to determine and interpret work requirements.
- Oversees the preparation of the annual budget, manages budget expenditures and oversees the development and review of specifications and the obtaining of price quotes for equipment, services and supplies.
- Uses a personal computer and mainframe terminal to perform a wide range of administrative and management functions.
- Reviews, comments and makes recommendations on design plans received from engineering consultants involved in construction activities
- Coordinates construction projects requiring reading, listening and talking and personal interactions with members of the business community.
- Oversees the preparation of the monthly NPDES (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System) reports for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) and other reports as required or assigned, which may require transcribing, interpreting and entering information using a personal computer.
- Serves as the main resource person on emergency and non-emergency problems requiring interpretation of information and the application of problem solving and logic skills.
- Establishes, implements and monitors division's policies and procedures.
- Implements and enforces the Sanitary Code, the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and industrial pre-treatment program.
- May serve as a management representative in collective bargaining negotiations.
- Travels to and from work sites as required.
Qualifications:
Qualifying applicants:
-Must possess and maintain a Class A Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification from the State of Michigan.
-Must have reliable transportation.
Ideal candidates will also have the following:
-A Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Chemical or Environmental Engineering, or Chemistry, Microbiology or a related field;
-Six (6) years of experience in either a Class A or B Wastewater Plant of which three (3) years must have been in a supervisory capacity in a Class A Plant; OR an equivalent combination of an Associate's degree in areas noted above AND eight (8) years of experience in either a Class A or B Wastewater Plant of which three (3) years must have been in a supervisory capacity in a Class A Plant.
-Experience in supervising staff within a multiple collective bargaining agreement environment, preferred.
