Explorations in Number Talks and Routines: GRADE 3

Course Description:
  • This course provides an opportunity for classroom teachers of students in Grade 3 to learn strategies and acquire tools to advance students' mathematical reasoning.
  • Aligned to research-based teaching practices and the Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics, topics will include addition, subtraction, and place value from the NBT and OA standards; the use of instructional routines including number talks; and the use of manipulatives, visual models and number lines.
  • Participants will receive books, activities and instructional materials including a classroom number line.
  • Participants will be expected to attend all 3 days of the course which will meet via 6 half-day ZOOM meeting sessions.  
Cost: $300/participant
Duration: 6 half-day sessions 
Location: Virtual ZOOM meetings.
  • Participants must be able to participate in the live and interactive ZOOM meeting sessions during the dates and times listed below for this Eastern/Central KY cohort. Sessions are not recorded to be watched at a different time.
  • Teachers should not be working with their classroom students during these training sessions. If necessary, substitute teachers should be obtained to cover participant's classroom during these sessions.  
  • 2021-22 MAF Teachers are required to complete all 6 half-day sessions. If unable to attend any of the 6 sessions, 2021-22 MAF Teachers must contact the KCM to complete that session with a different cohort.  
Days 1 & 2 = Four half-day sessions: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday, July 26-29, 2021: 1-4 pm Eastern Time (which is 12-3 pm Central) 
Day 3 = Two half-day sessions: Wednesday & Thursday, September 15-16, 2021: 1-4 pm Eastern Time (which is 12-3 pm Central) 

Registration for this cohort closes at midnight on Friday, June 18, 2021.  

* Materials will be mailed via UPS directly to each participant’s school. Please be sure to enter your school's physical mailing address when registering (no PO Box numbers) 

Please note: The $300 registration fee for this course is non-refundable once materials have been ordered. Should a registered participant find they are no longer able to attend this event, they should find a teacher to take their place and notify the KCM at
