Event Description
Scott Jackson, MS, CCC-SLP is a speech language pathologist at NorthBay Health Medical Center in the ENT Department. He currently specializes in voice disorders, dysphagia, and oral dysfunction/TMJ issues. He graduated from University of Arizona with his Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology with a minor in Psychology. He has been working as a Speech-Language Pathologist for over 30 years across the continuum of care with all different ages and diagnoses. He is retired from teaching at CA State Universities (Sacramento and San Jose) after teaching the “Dysphagia & the SLP in the Medical Setting” class at Sacramento State for 16 years and “Neuroanatomy” and “Adult Communication Disorders” at San Jose State.for 4 years.

Course Description: This lecture will address the role of the SLP in esophageal dysphagia for both evaluation and treatment purposes. Focus will be on how to best screen the esophagus during MBS studies, interpreting those results, treatment for basic issues such as behavioral management of reflux, poor esophageal motility, and education on medications. Use of MBS recordings will be used to help show impairments and treatment efficacy. Discussion will also be done re: possible effects of reflux on the voice and other areas.
Upon Completion of this course, participants will be able to:

9:10 - 9:30 Anatomy and physiology of the esophagus
9:30 - 10:00 Disorders of the esophagus
10:00- 10:45 Screening/Assessment of the esophagus with MBS recordings
10:45 - 11:45 Treatment of esophageal disorders for the SLP
11:45 – 12:00 Questions, Answers & Discussion

Refund Policy
Refund requests must be submitted in writing via email. Requests made more than 10 business days prior to course date will be subject to an administration fee of $15 of the registration fee if an additional cost is associated with the course. Membership fees will not be refunded if member is not able to attend conferences that are included with annual fee. Refund requests made less than 10 business days prior to any course that requires an additional fee for the course are subject to a $25 administrative fee. This is to cover the costs associated with the course that have already been accrued based on preregistration. No refunds for non-attendance will be issued on the day of, or after, the conference.
Cancellation Policy
If MSCC cancels a course that requires an additional registration fee, all members who have prepaid for the course will be refunded the registration fee in the form of the original payment within 30 business days of the cancellation of the course. MSCC membership fee will not be refunded.

- Describe and perform the DIEZ technique to assist with esophageal dysmotility.
- List behavioral management ideas for reflux.
- Identify what the classifications of medication (including alginates) used for treating reflux are and their possible side-effects.

- partial credits not allowed
- complete program evaluation
- must be completed within 7 days of completion of course
- certificate of completion will be awarded upon receipt
