Event Description

Speaker:  Carlene Yonemori, MA, CCC, CBIS is a speech-language pathologist at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center.  She is the program director at the Center for Applied Rehabilitation Technology (CART) at Rancho with over 29 years of experience.  She has extensive experience conducting evaluations and providing treatment in the area of AAC with various populations within the acute rehabilitation, outpatient clinic, and subacute settings.  She has presented at numerous local and community workshops as well as professional conferences including CSHA, CSUN, USSAAC and the State Wide Conference on Acquired Brain Injury on the topic of AAC.

Level of instruction:  Novice-Intermediate
 
Course description:  When an individual loses the ability to depend on speech to communicate due to injury or illness the Speech/Language Pathologist is responsible for determining the most optimal augmentative/alternative communication option.   These alternatives may be only temporarily established while the patient recovers, or may be part of an ongoing journey for long-term AAC use.  This presentation will provide an overview of the components of the AAC assessment, intervention considerations based on diagnosis and current abilities and potential resources/tools to assist the speech therapist with improving the individual’s communication.  Resources for more in depth assessment considerations will also be discussed.
 
Learning Outcomes:
  1.  Identify important components of the AAC assessment.
  2. Describe factors to consider when implementing AAC methods.
  3. List available intervention resources to support patients in need of AAC.
