Counseling & the SLP: Self-reflection on providing care in a medical setting

Event Description

Lynn Gallandt, MS, CCC  is a practicing SLP with a focus on adult outpatient rehabilitation. She is currently working at Los Alamitos Medical Center, Chapman University and has a private practice.  Lynn runs a weekly Parkinson’s voice group (LOUD Crowd) at the hospital and up until the pandemic, she also ran a monthly Stroke support group at the Los Alamitos Medical Center.  For the last 5 years she has been teaching both the counseling class for Chapman’s  graduate CSD program and as a practicum supervisor. Lynn spent over 8 years at the Brain Rehabilitation and Injury Network (B.R.A.I.N.) in Cypress beginning as a volunteer, completing  her CF and working as a licensed therapist. During her time there, she initiated a caregiver support group  ( BRAIN Angels) for parents and partners of a loved one with an acquired brain injury, the BRAIN Therapy choir and other groups to assist survivors as they transitioned to living with a brain injury.  Lynn has presented at CSHA with colleagues on Palliative Care and the Role of the SLP, and on Difficult Neurological Cases. Prior to becoming an SLP, Lynn worked as an educator for 25 years in general education, bilingual education, special education, Adult ESL and as a University supervisor. 
Course description:  Counseling in the field of Speech Language Pathology is often a misunderstood area yet it is a vital skill that is needed for most interactions with patients and their families. This course is designed to provide the opportunity to reflect on your current practice, identify the strengths you bring to your workplace and acquire additional strategies to add to your daily professional practice as an SLP.
Objectives:
  1. Generate three current personal/professional strengths at your work site*
  2. Specify two ways to increase your level of listening
  3. Provide two new strategies for approaching difficult conversations with patients/families
  4. Identify a missed moment of counseling to apply to future practice
Instructional level:  Intermediate
