Plant Description: The Holland Area Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) treats wastewater from the City of Holland and portions of the five adjacent townships (Holland Charter, Park, Fillmore, Laketown and Zeeland). The wastewater received from the city and townships arrives through two pipes, one from the north and one from the south side. Since beginning service in 1927, the WRF has undergone five major plant-wide renovations (1960, 1972, 1982, 1996 and 2017). Each renovation has increased the capacity of the facility. The most recent plant-wide renovation was a thorough upgrade to the aeration, oxidation and clarification equipment, transitioning the plant from a conventional activated sludge process to a High-Purity Oxygen Activated Sludge process. The WRF has a hydraulic loading capacity of 12 million gallons per day. On an average day, about nine MGD of wastewater flows to the plant.

Starting in 2020, construction began on a major change to the WRF solids handling process – the inclusion of anaerobic digestion. Formerly, thickened biosolids were either dewatered in screw presses and landfilled, or lime stabilized and land applied. Now, the thickened blend of primary sludge and WAS is thermophilically treated in high-temperature vessels before being sent into a 2-million-gallon Egg-Shaped-Digester (ESD) where it is anaerobically digested and eventually sent primarily to land application. This has resulted in a significant reduction in solids production and disposal costs and has incorporated many new pieces of equipment into the solids handling process. The resulting biogas is burned in a biogas boiler (to provide heat to heat exchangers and facility heating) and a 550kW combined heat and power (CHP) unit, offsetting some of the WRFs energy usage.

PARKING Information: Your tour will start in the Water Reclamation office building, which is located on the left-hand side of River Ave., across the street from the facility. See this parking map for reference. Visitors may park in the front parking lot, however, parking is limited. Please plan to carpool, if necessary. If parking is unavailbale at the office building, use the Magna/BPW parking lot down 2nd St. (Yellow pin on map).
