The Iron Mountain - Kingsford Wastewater Treatment Authority is seeking resumes from educated, knowledgeable and creative leaders, who are skilled and experienced in the science of wastewater treatment to fill the position of Wastewater Treatment Superintendent. The successful candidate will be friendly and enjoy working with a technically strong team, and is one who will support and empower staff, is a lifelong learner, can easily build relationships, is self-driven, organized, a visionary for the department and very familiar with MDEQ regulations for Wastewater Treatment.
The Iron Mountain Kingsford Wastewater Authority jointly serves approximately 13,000 residents between the City of Iron Mountain and the City of Kingsford. The WWTP is an activated sludge secondary plant designed for 3.3 MGD, which utilizes primary sedimentation, aeration tanks, final clarification, chlorination and de-chlorination for treatment of wastewater. Anaerobic digesters are used for solids treatment with land application of the biosolids produced. The WWTP also operates a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Basin for treatment of flows that exceed the main treatment plant capacity. A portion of the municipal collection system are combined. The CSO Basin consists of screening and grit removal, flow storage, chlorination and dechlorination if the CSO Basin storage capacity of 3.8 MG is exceeded. The annual operating budget is approximately 1.4 million dollars.
The wastewater team consists of a Wastewater Treatment Superintendent and four Wastewater Treatment Operators. The Wastewater Department staff is responsible for repairs and maintenance to the equipment at the Plant and CSO Basin. Plant staff also monitors and perform laboratory analysis on the sewage as it undergoes treatment at the Wastewater Plant. The treated sewage must meet stringent State and Federal Standards before it can be discharged to the Menominee River. The wastewater treatment plant accepts septage from three (3) Contracted septic tank waste haulers.


Qualifications:
This salaried, at-will position reports to the Iron Mountain Kingsford Wastewater Treatment Authority Board, which consists of the City Manager from each City and two residents, one appointed by each City Council. The applicant must possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent (associate degree preferred in engineering, water and/or wastewater operations, biology, microbiology, chemical engineering, public administration or similar) AND at least 1-3 years of full-time experience in the field of wastewater treatment, collection, operations and maintenance. The Authority reserves the right to consider other combinations of education and experience at its discretion. Possession of an EGLE class B municipal operator certification or ability to obtain such within a reasonable period of time required.
The position is responsible for providing leadership, supervision, direction and vision to the wastewater team to ensure success in the areas of employee and team development, training, goal attainment, operations, and facilities and technology management. Develops departmental operating policies and procedures and analyzes and recommends improvements in areas of expertise; prepares and monitors the annual operating and capital improvement budgets; participates in the employee recruitment and selection process; and assigns and directs departmental activities.

Hiring salary is $75,000 to $81,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
