GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To perform technical, semi-skilled and labor work in the operation, maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery in a water pumping and filtration plant; to maintain records, prepare reports and perform related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed on a rotating shift schedule under the supervision of the Water Filtration Plant Superintendent or other designated official.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)

Maintain plant operation and monitor security during assigned shifts.
Perform routine laboratory tests as required.
Operate and maintain equipment necessary for water treatment including pumps, chemical feeders, filters and other mechanical equipment to maintain optimal water quality.
Read and accurately record system pressures, rates of flow, filter operation, chemical usage, temperatures, atmospheric conditions and other routine plant operation and make adjustments when necessary to plant operation and distribution system.
Check intake wells and remove ice and debris from screens, inspect operating conditions of pumps and other equipment during assigned shifts.
Receive, transmit and log communications, radio transmissions, phone calls and any other emergency notifications.
Assist in the preparation of weekly, monthly and routine reports required by the MDEQ.
Operate emergency equipment in case of power failure or during notified emergency response conditions.
Detect and make repairs to operational equipment, including disassembly and overhaul of pumps, feeders and test equipment.
Clean and maintain building, laboratory equipment and operational machinery.
Collect water samples from designated areas in the City’s distribution system for analysis.
Perform related work as required.


Qualifications:
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:

Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in water treatment plant operations and maintenance.
Knowledge of the water pumping and distribution system.
Ability to repair and maintain water pumping equipment.
Ability to make routine laboratory tests to determine chemical, biological and inorganic qualities of water.
Ability to maintain records and to prepare accurate reports.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Mechanical aptitude evidenced by the results of an examination for such purpose.
Ability to work effectively with other employees.

An employee in this class, upon appointment, must have the equivalent of the following training and experience:

Graduation from an accredited high school, plus additional training
Some experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of water treatment equipment.
Certificate to operate a Class F-3 plant desirable.
Certificate to operate a Class F-4 plant required.
F-4 certification requirement may be waived when no applicant meets certification requirements but not beyond applicant's provisional certificate.
Must have a valid Michigan Driver License (Operator’s).

Working Hours: 8-hour, swing shifts (The WFP operates 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year.)

Salary Range: $20.87 - $26.09 per hour

Additional Compensation (per the U.W.U.A. Local 532 collective bargaining agreement):
WFP Operator possessing a State of Michigan F-3 Certification will receive an additional $2.25/hour.
WFP Operator possessing a State of Michigan F-2 Certification will receive an additional $2.75/hour.

Physical Demands:
Ability to climb/descend ladders and stairs up to a height of 150 feet.
Ability to work at heights up to 150 feet.
Ability to climb/descend several flights of steps throughout the work day.
Ability to walk or stand for prolonged periods of time.
Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
