This leadership position in the Water Utilities Department oversees the Water Distribution and Sewer Collection Activities in the City of Allegan.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Managing and directing the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system and sanitary sewer collection system and supervising staff to meet all State and Federal regulatory criteria. Supervising, planning, coordinating, and participating in the installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution systems and meters, as well as sewage conveyance systems. Plans and coordinates work schedules of the water distribution/sewer collection maintenance employees and prioritizes projects.


Qualifications:
• A high school diploma supplemented by additional formal education in construction techniques and the skilled trades.

• Five or more years in water distribution system maintenance and sanitary sewer collection system maintenance with some supervisory experience.

• State of Michigan S-2 Water Certification or willingness to acquire certification within a reasonable timeframe.

• A Michigan class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the endorsements appropriate for the City’s fleet, or the ability to obtain one upon hire.

• Knowledge of the principles, practices and regulations governing the distribution of potable water.

• Knowledge of the safety practices, issues, tools, equipment, methods, and materials utilized in water distribution and sanitary sewer collection, and skill in applying them to regular and emergency projects.

• Knowledge of water and sewer main construction, repair and maintenance.

• Skill in evaluating the conditions of underground pipes and the ability to determine the pressure requirements of a water distribution system.

• Skill in training, supervising and evaluating the work of others.

• Skill in maintaining accurate and thorough reports and records.

• Skill in prioritizing and leading a wide range of utility repairs.

• Skill in building and maintaining effective working relationships with public officials, contractors, business and property owners, various professionals, community groups and the general public.

• Ability to read and maintain records and maps of utility mains, valves and service lines.

• Ability to communicate effectively and present ideas orally and in writing.
