Waldron Devol Sheets earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1940. He started his career as an assistant chemist at the Columbus Sewage Treatment Plant. He is best known as a professor who helped establish the Water Resources Center of The Ohio State University. He coordinated the five day short schools starting in 1948 as an activity of the university in addition to his regular duties. These short schools grew in popularity over the next several years under his guidance. His commitment to operator education in Ohio continued as he was one of the founders of the Operator Training Committee of Ohio, Inc. (OTCO) and became its first Executive Director. Mr. Sheets is credited with training thousands of operators in both water and wastewater.
Award Description: The W.D. Sheets Award is presented to an individual who is active in the field of education, and demonstrates outstanding accomplishment and service in the field of training and education of students for positions in the area of operation and design of wastewater facilities. Candidates shall have participated actively in teaching classes or making presentations for OWEA, WEF or other organizations. Traditionally, this award is given at the awards breakfast/brunch/lunch at the annual conference.
