Join us as we explore ethical considerations to support people with eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties (EDS). Our approach to working with patients and families is gradually moving from one of paternalistic risk aversion to that of a collaborator in a complex and multidimensional scenario. Yet many SLPs fear for their licenses if they move outside the accepted practice in their facility or region—even when those practices are based more on historical preference than on current evidence and best practice. This course will examine the importance of understanding the bigger picture, supported by bioethical principles and the evidence base. While the SLP is one cog in a complex machine, they may also be the linchpin in achieving the best possible outcomes for patients and their families.
