Presented by Meredith Wisniewski and Ariele Lee from the Phelps Center for Gifted in Springfield, MO
Tuesday November 3, 2026 4:30 p.m.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Superheroes walk among us, but how do we know? Behind masks and capes are stories of individuals who impact others. Learn about a unit that guides students through reflections on heroic character traits and connections between external and internal powers -- the perfect metaphor for supporting gifted learners. As with social and emotional learning: “With great power comes great responsibility.”
Meredith Wisniewski is in her 19th year teaching in gifted education and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She has served on the executive board of the Gifted Association of Missouri for over fifteen years, including roles as president and legislative advocacy chair, and helped pass Missouri's gifted education mandate.
E. Ariele Lee is an avid consumer of most media in the superhero genre and uses lessons from our fictional friends in her lessons regularly. She has been teaching for 11 years, this year being her fourth teaching gifted students in Springfield, MO, as well as working at Drury University for 15 years in their Pre-College Programs. Ariele also enjoys other things that are not directly super-- reading, watching movies, weightlifting, cycling, and making music—in her free time.
