Presentation:
Exploring Culture & Interpretation at the
Museum of Mississippi History & Mississippi Civil Rights Museum
Join us for a dynamic exploration of the Two Mississippi Museums—the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and the Museum of Mississippi History—led by Michael Morris, a leader in advancing inclusive public history and museum education. In this session, participants will examine how museums can serve as powerful sites of cultural interpretation, truth-telling, and critical reflection. Drawing on examples from the Two Mississippi Museums, Michael will highlight strategies for engaging diverse audiences, navigating complex historical narratives, and fostering meaningful dialogue across difference. The session will also situate this work within key historical moments, including Freedom Summer of 1964, Mississippi’s official statewide desegregation in 1970, and the much later, widely recognized integration of Cleveland High School in 2016–2017—underscoring the enduring and unfinished nature of this history.
Participants will gain insight into how exhibits are curated to center lived experiences, challenge dominant narratives, and connect historical struggles for justice to contemporary issues. This webinar invites NAME members to deepen their understanding of civil rights history while strengthening their capacity to translate these lessons into educational and community contexts. Attendees will leave with practical approaches for advancing multicultural education, cultivating belonging, and using history as a tool for social change.
