Event Description

1D-2D Model Development Techniques and Applications

Sponsored by Hazen & Sawyer

2D modeling, what is it and when it could be applied: There are methods to assess potential flood impacts using traditional 1D model techniques and GIS applications. This presentation will focus on the benefits of using 2D modeling for stormwater planning. Participants will learn how this differs from 1D modeling from planning and data needs to support 2D modeling.

2D model development techniques: Characterizing features within a study area may include many details which can translate into processing large volumes of data. The presenters will discuss the latest techniques in characterizing project areas in 2D and integrating 2D models with 1D models.

1D-2D model applications: There are many software applications capable of performing integrated 1D-2D modeling and each application varies on its capabilities. The presenters will summarize a few common applications used and how they differ.

Lessons learned from previous applications: The presenters will provide an overview of real-world projects that have applied 1D-2D modeling to characterize collection systems capacity and identify root causes of flooding. The project overviews will highlight the best practices, outcomes and understanding of these approaches to stormwater modeling.
