August Webinar 2023
8/9/2023
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM EST

Event Description
It is common to have flow monitoring and depth sensors in the sewer collection systems to track flows and levels in the wastewater collection system. This information could help operate the system more efficiently by understanding flow, depth, velocity, and capacity at different times and across and range of flow conditions. Deploying water quality sensors allows a more complete picture of sewer flows and loads to be understood by a wastewater utility. This knowledge could allow wastewater plants to understand organic loads before they reach the treatment plant, minimizing plant upsets and allowing for more efficient operation.

A number of applications for this type of monitoring will be discussed, including: (1) Corrosive discharges, when released into the sewer system can have the potential to damage pipes, manholes, structures and pump stations, (2) water quality sensors being used to provide predictive loading at a wastewater treatment plant with the benefit of improved process efficiency and reduce the risk of exceedance, (3) using smart sensors to quickly determine if a site requires more extensive monitoring and sampling to determine sources of pollution and (4)  monitoring at the interjurisdictional connection between two agencies to show how water quality can be monitored by an agency to help develop more efficient operational strategies.

The case study will highlight the benefits of water quality sensors in sewers systems to gain a comprehensive picture in a specific application. This case study is for a combined sewer system, where smart sensors were deployed to help characterize sites for more comprehensive monitoring and determination of point source dischargers of pollutants.

This webinar is made possible by the generous support of Stantec.
