August Webinar
8/11/2021

Event Description
OWEA’s August monthly webinar, slated for August 11 at 3 pm, will feature “Diatoms for Evaluating Excess Nutrient Conditions.”

Diatom indicators of biological condition have been developed and applied at local, regional and national scales with relationships among these indicators, human disturbance, and water quality. Changes in diatom and non-diatom algal biomass in streams also appear consistently related to nutrient concentrations in streams. Diatoms respond directly to changes in nutrient concentrations, which are reflective of changes in nutrient loading. No other group of organisms used in biological assessment respond directly to nutrient concentrations. Relationships between algae and nutrients are commonly related to both numeric and narrative ambient water quality nutrient criteria in states across the country. This webinar will discuss the strong relationships that have been established between algae and nutrient condition status in flowing waterbodies across the country, provide an overview of how the data Ohio EPA has been collecting over the last decade can inform the relationship, and follow with results of a pilot study in Central Ohio where simultaneous measurement of diatoms and phosphorus was used to characterize nutrient condition status on Raccoon Creek along a stream reach with mixed point and non-point nutrient sources.
