2023 76th OCLTC Derby – Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Dear OCLTC Members,

The 2023 76^th OCLTC Derby will be held Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for the first time. Fishing in Cabo can be extraordinarily good, and our target species will be striped marlin. Our home base will be at the All-Inclusive Breathless Resort and Spa which is ideally located on the marina where our boats will pick us up and drop us off. Due to Covid, it has been a challenge to organize a Derby outside the USA with the possibility of having to cancel. A safe destination for our return to international travel appears to be Cabo San Lucas. Boats and hotels are requiring more advanced deposits, but we have been able to procure them at amazing, reduced fees. This has unfortunately caused an overlap in Derby arrangements, payment schedules, which puts a slight strain on our club financial reserves due to required advanced deposits. We hope all of you support our need for advanced commitments and payments.

DERBY FORMAT AND OVERVIEW:
The 2023 OCLTC Derby will feature 3 days of fishing with a fun-day/weather-day scheduled in. Fishing is scheduled for May 1^st, 2^nd and either May 3rd or 4^th.  If the weather cooperates, we will have a fun fishing day on the alternating tournament day. The Derby format is set up so we will have 3 anglers per boat with each angler allowed one rod. We will be using 20# test Hi Viz tournament grade line and it will be supplied to each participant prior to the tournament.
 
SOCIAL EVENTS:
We will have opening dinner on Sunday April 30^th. A guest brunch will be on Tuesday May 2^nd. Closing dinner will take place on Thursday May 4th. Meals on other days will be “on your own” but are included in the price as are drinks, alcohol.

HOTEL:
Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort and Spa is an ADULT ONLY HOTEL. Since we will be a group, Breathless Resort is able to give us an exceptional discounted rate for a room with a balcony overlooking the marina, and upgrade to the executive Xhale club. Our rooms will be the “xhale Club Suite with Marina View”. Extra days either before or after the derby will be available at time of registration. This selection is necessary at time of registration to guarantee the room. Adding rooms later could be at a higher rate or not available. Reservations for extra nights before or after are non-refundable once confirmed.
This selection of additional nights will be available as part of the registration process.

BOATS:
We have procured the service of Minerva's Baja Tackle and Sportfishing Charters for boat arrangements. Boats will be from 31’ to 36’ Bertram and express boats. We have arranged for these boats to pick us up and drop us off at the hotel dock. The fun day will be set up intending to accommodate all anglers and interested guests.

COST:
The cost of the derby which includes fishing and hotel (All Inclusive Food and Drinks) for 1 angler and a non-fishing guest is $5,945. Basic cost includes 5 nights/6 days Sunday April 30, 2023 - Friday May 5, 2023, at Breathless. Extra nights either before the derby or after are $515/night with a 3-night maximum on either side of the trip.

Members must register for rooms with the OCLTC derby registration. Our club rate is approximately 20% off regular rates thanks to the Value Added Tax exemption that we can receive as a group. The rooms we are getting for a fishing Derby are excellent so there will be no upgrading of rooms due to uncertainty of being able to guarantee upgraded rooms.

The hotel will be coordinated by your derby chairman as part of the overall package. Please do not call the hotel directly nor make your own individual reservation. Anglers will be taken on a first come, first serve basis with a maximum of 21 anglers. Your registration is based upon the date your payment is received-credit card is fastest.   
 
If we have more interest than 21 anglers and need more boats and rooms, we will do our best to arrange additional boats and rooms, but rates could be higher. As in previous Derbies, any anglers over the maximum of 21 will be accepted in groups of 3 only or put on a waiting list. As per the club by-laws, we will open the registration to non-member anglers 30 days after this announcement and dependent on available angler slots.
 
Three payments for this derby are the plan. A payment of $2,000 is required to reserve a place in the derby and is due upon registration. The second payment of $2,000 is due on July 1^st and the final payment is due on October 15^th. Although only the first payment is due at time of registration the process will allow you to pay $2,000, $4,000 or $5,945.00 (True-up payment due at last payment date). Any extra nights will be calculated/collected with the October 15^th payment.
 
Should you have a change in plans and cannot attend, it is the member responsibility to assist with locating a substitute. If you find another member or guest to take your place and it is approved by the Derby Chairman, you will be responsible for collecting your paid fees from your replacement.
