VA Connecticut- Suicide Prevention Program
Connecticut’s Suicide Prevention Team provides education and training to VA staff, Veterans, as well as community stakeholders. Our goal is to raise awareness on the warning signs of suicide, as well as share available resources for prevention. Remember, suicide is preventable, you are not alone, and help is available. We are committed to the mission that:
Suicide Prevention is Everyone’s Business. Be a Life S-A-V-E-R.

Know the Warning Signs of Suicide:
  • Thinking about or looking for ways of hurting or killing yourself or talking about death, dying or suicide
  • Increased use of alcohol and drugs
  • Increase in anxiety/agitation, talking about feeling like a burden
  • Making preparations for suicide; acquiring means (guns, pills, other)
  • Withdrawing from people or activities/isolating, making comments that are hopeless
  • Engaging in risky activities without thinking about the consequences

Ask the Question:
  • Be direct and straightforward
  • Are you thinking about suicide? Have you had thoughts about taking your life?
  • Have you been thinking about killing yourself?

Validate:
  • Express empathy for the person’s feelings
  • Do not pass judgment, argue, or try to convince the person why he/she is wrong

Encourage & Expedite Immediate Assessment:
  • Don’t keep the suicidal ideation/behavior a secret, and don’t leave a suicidal person alone
  • Encourage access to MH provider/doctor, or escort to nearest emergency room
