Speaker:   Kara Jones
, MA, CCC-SLP is a Speech Language Pathologist who specializes in adult dysphagia.  She received her Master’s at State University of New York at Buffalo.  Kara works in the acute care setting at Wellstar North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, Georgia where she completes Modified Barium Swallow Studies and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES).  Kara is passionate about her work with patients in both the Intensive Care Unit and Neurointensive Care Unit.  Kara is a past President of the Georgia Speech Language Hearing Association (GSHA) and is a 4-time ACE award winner.

Course description: This presentation will discuss case studies and examples of moral distress experienced by speech-language pathologists in dysphagia management.  Sheather & Fidler (2021) define moral distress as “a psychological harm arising when people are forced to make, or witness, decisions or actions that contradict their core moral values”. Moral distress in healthcare will be defined as compared to a moral dilemma or ethical dilemma.  The relationship of moral distress and burnout will be identified.  Finally, strategies to cope with the psychological harm and institutional barriers will be examined.

Learning Objectives
1.  Define Moral Distress as it relates to the field of Speech Language Pathology and dysphagia management.
2.  Describe at least four institutional constraints which can cause moral distress in Speech Language Pathology and dysphagia management
3.  Appraise strategies to cope with moral distress and burnout in dysphagia management. 

Time ordered agenda:
6:30 – 7:00  Healthcare Ethics 101
7:00 – 7:30: Identifying and describing moral distress situations in dysphagia management
7:30 – 7:45:  Examining strategies to cope with moral distress
7:45 – 8:15:  Applying coping strategies to specific cases in dysphagia management
8:15 – 8:30:  Wrap up/question and answer

In order to receive credit for this course participants must complete the following requirements:  

  • attend entire course
    • sign into zoom session (phone participation only will not receive ASHA CEU's) 
    • partial credits not allowed
  • complete program evaluation
    • must be completed within 7 days of completion of course
    • certificate of completion will be awarded upon receipt of program evaluation

Refund Policy
Refund requests must be submitted in writing via email. Requests made more than 10 business days prior to course date will be subject to an administration fee of $15 of the registration fee if an additional cost is associated with the course.  Membership fees will not be refunded if member is not able to attend conferences that are included with annual fee.  Refund requests made less than 10 business days prior to any course that requires an additional fee for the course are subject to a $25 administrative fee.  This is to cover the costs associated with the course that have already been accrued based on preregistration.  No refunds for non-attendance will be issued on the day of, or after, the conference.

Cancellation Policy
If MSCC cancels a course that requires an additional registration fee, all members who have prepaid for the course will be refunded the registration fee in the form of the original payment within 30 business days of the cancellation of the course.   MSCC membership fee will not be refunded.
