Event Description
Augercast Pile Testing and Construction for a New Library in Castle Rock, Colorado
Hayden Leach, Project Engineer and Phillip Gallet, Senior Engineer - Business Development - Keller North America

The construction of a new library in Castle Rock, Colorado required the installation of deep foundation systems to support the building loads. Keller was brought onto the team to discuss alternatives to traditional caissons. Keller has experience with aggregate piers on many of the nearby structures, but ultimately the county wanted a deep foundation system. Augercast piles were selected as the preferred foundation system due to the cost and schedule savings in lieu of drilled caissons.
This presentation will discuss the design, testing and construction of the augercast piles for the library project. The augercast pile installation was completed within the required schedule and half of the original caisson budget. Quality control measures were implemented throughout the construction process to ensure the integrity and performance of the piles. The pile load test results confirmed the design assumptions, and the piles met the required capacity.
This project demonstrates the successful application of augercast piles as a deep foundation system for a new library in Castle Rock, Colorado. The design and testing methodologies presented can be used as a reference for similar projects in the future.

Speakers
Hayden Leach received his bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 2016, and began working for Keller (Anderson Drilling at the time) as a field engineer in 2017. His current role is Project Manager for Keller’s deep foundation business in the Rocky Mountain Region. Current responsibilities include estimating and managing deep foundation projects across the Rocky Mountain Region. Hayden worked closely with Phillip on this job and was responsible for the day-to-day management and execution of the project.

Phillip Gallet, P.E. has been in the geotechnical engineering business his whole life. Starting as a laboratory technician for his father’s company and working his way into an engineering position. After receiving his undergraduate degree and master’s degree from Auburn University, Phillip was hired by Keller (Hayward Baker at the time). His current role is Senior Engineer – Business Development for Keller’s Rocky Mountain Region.  His current responsibilities include direct client assistance with technique selection, business development in the Rocky Mountains, estimating and managing a variety of Geotechnical Construction projects. Phillip was instrumental in the VE design of this project to come with the most cost effective solution that met with the clients requests.
