10/13/2021 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Event Description
An Overview of Commonly Used Trenchless Boring Techniques Along the Front Rage
Jason Langer, Underground Infrastructure Technologies (UIT)
1 PDH
Presentation:
As the population of the front range continues to increase, the growth continues to stimulate development requiring new utility installations in challenging conditions around already existing infrastructure. Additionally, the aging existing infrastructure must continue to be improved to meet increased demand. Trenchless boring of utilities across, next to, and under existing infrastructure is done to minimize disruption to existing utility services and to the public in urban environments. Common trenchless methods utilized include Guided and Unguided Auger Bores, Guided and Unguided Pipe Rams, Hand Tunneling, Slip Lining, and Tunnel and Microtunnel Boring. In order to choose the appropriate method, one must consider the geotechnical conditions, groundwater table, proximity to existing infrastructure, proximity to the surface, the length and diameter of the planned bore, as well as overall cost of the boring method. Jason will provide an overview of commonly used boring techniques along the front range and the appropriate geotechnical conditions for each method. Several recently completed projects will be discussed to illustrate how the methods are implemented, and challenges that may be encountered.
Speaker:
Jason Langer is General Manager of Underground Infrastructure Technologies (UIT) in Lakewood, CO. UIT installs trenchless crossings in challenging soil conditions underneath and alongside essential existing infrastructure in the Western United States. Prior to joining UIT, Jason was a Regional Director for a nationwide Geotechnical Contractor. Jason has extensive experience in geotechnical construction and tunneling including shoring and deep foundations, landslide and rockfall stabilization, grouting and ground improvement techniques, auger boring, pipe ramming and microtunneling. He holds a BS in Geology and an MS in the Environmental Sciences.
