5/12/2021
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Event Description
UAV Technology Applications in Data Collection for Geohazard Analysis
May 12 12PM-1PM

Presenters:
Ben Arndt, PE, RJ Engineering and Consulting
Jon Altschuld, Chinook Landscape Architecture

This presentation will cover the use of UAV (drone) photogrammetry to capture high resolution and accuracy 3D datasets of rockfaces for geotechnical analysis and mitigation design. Jon Altschuld (Chinook Landscape Architecture) and Ben Arndt (RJ Engineering and Consulting) will show how they have used UAVs in unique workflows to capture and process this data, as well as how the data is then used for detailed geohazard analysis.

Presenters:

Ben Arndt, PE, with RJH Consultants, has over 25 years of experience in the geological and geotechnical engineering field.  This includes 20 years of working on transportation projects throughout the western U.S., 2 years of forensic engineering, and 5 years of underground mining experience.  His areas of expertise include evaluation, analysis and mitigation of: unstable rock and soil slopes, rockslope scaling, landslide mitigation, and specialty foundation and retaining wall systems.

Jon Altschuld is a registered Landscape Architect with over 12 years of experience. As the founder and principal of Chinook Landscape Architecture, he is experienced in many facets of landscape architecture and has an expertise in drone data collection, 3D visualization, transportation, and ecological restoration projects. Jon has worked closely with several geotechnical engineers to develop specialized workflows to collect ultra high resolution 3D data of rockfaces along roadways. This data is then used for geohazard analysis and mitigation approaches. Jon has used these techniques on a wide range of projects, included the I-70 Westbound Peak Period Shoulder Lane (CO), US-50 Little Blue Canyon (CO), Ven-33 Geohazard Mitigation (CA), and SD-44 Geohazard Mitigation (SD). In addition to project work, Jon has taught numerous software workshops and given professional training on SketchUp, Vue, CAD, Lumion, and Adobe Graphics programs within the Planning, Architecture, & Landscape Architecture fields. Jon is the co-author of the internationally published book "Drone Technology in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction."
