Presentation on Colorado's Early Residents: A presentation on some of Colorado's lesser-known treasures

Hiding within Colorado’s mountainous successions of redbeds and ridge-capping strata, are rather ugly rocks that record Colorado’s passage through two mass extinctions.  These include the end-Devonian event, 360 million years ago, and the Permian-Triassic event, 250 million years ago. Although challenging to decipher in outcrop and in the subsurface, they help us understand the geological tiramisu that lies beneath our feet in the Rocky Mountain region, and contain environmental indicators and fossils reflect the interplay between continental and marine conditions at transitions between wet and dry climates.  Collectively, they have potential to inform our understanding of how inland continental settings were impacted by two global-scale biotic-environmental events. And, their surface exposures are relevant to everyday Coloradans, because they contain paleokarst and evaporites that locally foster small-scale geohazards like sinkholes and seepage in reservoirs.

James Hagadorn is the Tim and Kathryn Ryan Curator of Geology at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.  Everything about "deep time" fascinates him.  He’s spent the last twenty years studying modern and ancient environments, and working to convey this information to the public.  Through fieldwork, labwork, and collaboration with academic and community scientists, he has studied extinct creatures, ancient sedimentary environments, large volcanic deposits, weird minerals, and a variety of enigmatic 'whatsits'.
