Event Description

KCM is proud to partner with the Kentucky Department of Education to offer middle school educators impactful professional learning experiences (PLEs).  For teachers of 8th grade and accelerated 7th grade, the KCM, with grant funding from KDE, plans to provide a free four-day PLE in 2016-17.  This two-session experience allows middle school educators to gain a greater understanding of how to support students in developing algebraic and functional reasoning. This PLE will focus on standards in the Expressions & Equations (EE) and Functions (F) strands.

Participants will:

  • Identify Big Ideas embedded in middle school Kentucky Core Academic Standards for Mathematics and Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Use instructional strategies to improve critical thinking, problem solving, and classroom discourse
  • Explore evidence-based instructional strategies that can be used to help all students
  • Analyze student responses and interpret evidence of student understanding and skills
  • Receive resources such as ready-made activities, manipulatives, books, etc.

Participants should be Kentucky 7th or 8th grade educators and are expected to attend all 4 days of the professional learning experience. Teachers who work with 9th grade students are welcome, but the content focus will be on 8th grade standards. Coaches and instructional supervisors are eligible to attend only if they do so along with a classroom teacher. Coaches/instructional supervisors are also expected to attend all 4 days of the PLE.

Dates: Nov. 3 & 4, 2016 and Feb. 2 & 3, 2017
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
