BIM + Design-Build Drive Lifecycle Value for Owners

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a tool or model-based technology that produces a building information model enabling a highly collaborative Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) process throughout a project’s lifecycle. The whole team approach inherent in Design-Build is an ideal environment for BIM/VDC to flourish (more than any other project delivery system), especially when you can take advantage of an integrated project team from the outset, creating a platform where all the Owner’s goals can be embraced early. 

We’re increasingly seeing Owner’s goals include a BIM-based delivery strategy where a model and data-based set of deliverables are required. The Ohio State University is one of these forward-thinking Owners that has successfully developed a BIM Project Delivery Standard that enables the model to serve as a single source of truth for relevant spatial and asset information. It also ensures the turnover documentation is valuable throughout the entire building lifecycle.

This industry-leading BIM Project Delivery Standard defines how projects will be executed and how deliverables will be formatted across their more than 37,000,000 square-foot campus. By implementing a BIM Project Delivery Standard, the university has been able to enhance planning and communication resulting in improved quality and speed of decision-making while also reducing their total cost of ownership.
