President's Message

Dear Members and Friends of CASIA,

What an incredible few weeks it’s been for CASIA! I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you who joined us at this year’s CASIA Lobster Bake—and what a night it was! We welcomed over 90 attendees to the beautiful Penfield Pavilion for a great evening of fun, food, and laugher. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, and the beach backdrop made it all the more special. A huge thank you to our sponsors DSC, Honeywell Fire, and Security Central—your support helped make this event such a success. Check out the pictures below.

From the delicious lobster and barbeque chicken to the fantastic live entertainment by GKO, the night was filled with good vibes and great company! One of the highlights was our networking bingo activity, which sparked new conversations and connections across the board.

Congratulations to Zig Sokolowski and Sam Militar on winning the cash prize!! It’s events like this that truly reflect the strength and spirit of our CASIA!

Now, as we enjoy the energy and momentum of a fantastic start to summer, it’s time to set our sights on another major milestone: the 35th Annual CASIA Golf Classic! This is no ordinary tournament—we’re celebrating 35 years of camaraderie, competition, and community-building. Last year’s record-breaking turnout of 112 golfers set the bar high, and we’re aiming even higher this year! We’d love for you to join us as we make this anniversary event one to remember.

All of this positive momentum is a direct reflection of you—our members—and the incredible work of our dedicated Board. Thank you for staying engaged, showing up, and helping us grow CASIA once again!

I’d also like to offer Special Congratulations on behalf of our Board of Directors to two outstanding individuals:

  • Pat Shea Remes, our long-time Executive Director, who received a special recognition from ESA at ESX in June—well deserved!
  • Jamie Orvis, for receiving an ESA Lifetime Membership—a tremendous honor for a true leader in our industry.

And before I wrap up, a quick but important reminder: if you haven’t yet explored our new online training through CASIA’s Alarm Academy at www.casiact.org, now is the time! These courses are game changers—designed to make your team more knowledgeable, efficient, and impactful. It’s another way CASIA is working to give you the tools to succeed.

Here’s to a strong summer ahead—see you on the golf course!

Sincerely,

Jim Carey

CASIA President

Pat Shea Remes Honored!!

Please join us in congratulating Pat Shea Remes on receiving a special recognition award from ESA at this year’s ESX! This honor is so well deserved, and a reflection of the incredible impact Pat has had—not just in Connecticut, but across the industry.

We have been so very blessed to have Pat on our side for decades. Her leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment helped shape CASIA into the strong, respected association it is today. And we’re especially grateful that she continues to stay involved with us, sharing her knowledge and support. Thank you, Pat and Congratulations!

Here is a portion of the awards presentation presented by Kevin Stone, Chairman of ESA:

"Pat has been the driving force behind the success of the association. Her dedication and tireless efforts have shaped and strengthened not only the security industry in Connecticut but have also made a significant impact on the national landscape. Whether working with local municipalities on alarm ordinances, advocating for fair licensing and training regulations at the state level, or representing our industry's interests during every Washington Blitz on Capitol Hill, Pat has been a constant, unwavering advocate.

Her commitment extended far beyond state borders. Pat generously shared her knowledge and successful strategies with other state associations, helping to raise the bar for the industry as a whole. She has been a prolific fundraiser, always seeking innovative ways to support local initiatives and critical national programs such as SIAC (Security Industry Alarm Coalition).

Pat’s deep involvement was evident in her attendance at nearly every ESX show over the years, and even in retirement, her dedication remains strong.

Through her leadership, mentorship, and advocacy, Pat has played a central role in promoting professionalism, growing membership, and ensuring the voice of our industry was heard at every level. She is a true pillar of the security community, and we are deeply grateful for her extraordinary contributions.

Pat, thank you for everything you've done for our industry. You are more than deserving of this special recognition."

Congratulations to Jamie Orvis!

Please join us in congratulating Jamie Orvis on being awarded Lifetime Membership with ESA—an incredible and well-earned recognition of his lasting impact on our industry.

Jamie’s leadership, advocacy, and commitment to professionalism not only elevated his own company but has helped move the entire electronic security industry forward.

Here at CASIA, we’ve been lucky to count Jamie as a valued member, Past President, trusted voice, someone who has always showed up and supported CASIA's efforts big and small. This honor from ESA reflects what we’ve long known—Jamie’s contributions will be felt for generations to come.

Congratulations, Jamie, and thank you for continuing to inspire us all!

Here is a portion of the awards presentation presented by Kevin Stone, Chairman of ESA:

"ESA has awarded James “Jamie” Orvis with Lifetime Membership, one of the association’s highest honors, in recognition of his decades-long dedication and leadership in the electronic security and life safety industry.

Jamie began his volunteer service with the Connecticut Burglar & Fire Alarm Association in 1987, where he served on numerous committees and ultimately led the organization as its President. His commitment to the betterment of the industry soon extended to the national level, where he made a lasting impact through his work with the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA), now known as ESA.

At the national level, Orvis chaired several influential committees, including the Chartered State Association Relations, Marketing & Communications, and the San Francisco Convention. His strategic insight and leadership led to his election to the NBFAA Board of Directors from 1996 to 1997, followed by his tenure as Vice President on the Executive Committee from 1998 to 2004.

His service to the industry also included an impressive 15-year term as Treasurer on the Board of Directors for the Alarm Industry Research & Educational Foundation (AIREF). In that role, Orvis was instrumental in managing and growing the foundation's fundraising initiatives, most notably through the AIREF Golf Classic. Under his leadership, the event raised over $1.1 million over a decade—funds that supported research and education vital to the industry’s advancement.

In 2009, Orvis was named ESA Morris F. Weinstock Person of the Year, a prestigious award recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to the electronic security and life safety industry.

Beyond his association work, Orvis who began installing alarms in the 8th grade, ultimately served as President of his family’s security business, Security Solutions in Norwalk, CT from 1990 until his retirement in 2024, marking over four decades of stewardship in the private sector.

James Orvis’s Lifetime Membership in ESA is a fitting tribute to a career defined by service, leadership, and unwavering dedication to the security and life safety profession."

Summer is for Skill-Building:

Use this Season to Invest in Your Team

As we move into the summer months, many members experience a subtle shift in pace—whether it's a little more daylight at the end of the workday, team members taking vacations, or project timelines stretching slightly. But this seasonal slowdown also presents a valuable opportunity: it's the perfect time to invest in your team’s growth.

One of CASIA’s top priorities this year has been making it easier for our members to access meaningful, industry-specific education. That’s why we’re so excited about our new online training platform through CASIA's Alarm Academy, available anytime at www.casiact.org.

This platform allows your technicians and support staff to sharpen their skills, and become more effective team members—without disrupting your workflow. Whether you need training in fire alarm systems, security, AV/Automation, sales, project management, or networking, it’s all right there, ready when you are.

Here’s how some of our member companies are already using it:

  • New hires are getting up to speed faster than ever
  • Technicians are brushing up on code knowledge before inspections
  • Managers are identifying training gaps and giving team members paths to advancement

If you haven’t yet explored these courses, I encourage you to make it a summer priority. It’s a small investment of time that pays off in increased productivity, fewer mistakes, and stronger customer satisfaction. Here is what one of our members has to say:

"I recently completed the CASIA Fire Alarm 101 online training session. I was thoroughly impressed by the quality and depth of the content. The session was well-structured, engaging, and incredibly informative. The content demonstrated thorough knowledge of the subject and presented the material in a way that was easy to understand and immediately applicable to our trade.

What stood out most was the interactive approach—reviewing slides and bullet points that made the learning experience dynamic and enjoyable. As a veteran alarm person, the course was well worth the time I spent to review the basics of fire alarm systems.

Whether you're new to the topic or looking to deepen your understanding, I highly recommend this training. It’s an investment in your professional growth that truly pays off."

~Bob Klein – Former Installer/Service Tech/Business Owner for over 47 years

The most successful companies in our industry know that education isn’t a one-time box to check—it’s a mindset. By building a culture of continuous learning, you show your team that growth is expected, supported, and celebrated.

Let’s use this season not just to recharge, but to reinvest in the people who make your business thrive. The best part is CASIA is here to help you every step of the way.

Here’s to a safe, productive summer of learning!

Research Roundup! Zonda:

New Home Sales: The Muted Spring Continues

From Zonda:

"Consumers in many housing markets across the country have reached their limit, both financially and mentally. Financially, stubbornly high mortgage rates have contributed to housing affordability holding at the worst level in 30 years. Mentally, people are still trying to make sense of the impact of tariffs and are nervous about job security. As a result, the housing market isn’t going anywhere fast.

We see this in the latest Zonda data. New home sales were flat month-over-month and were down 6.9% compared to last year. The Zonda Market Ranking, which looks at new home sales adjusted for supply and seasonality, came in as average yet again in April. Importantly, quick move-in (QMI) inventory isn’t hitting the alarming levels we saw in 2022, at least not nationally. Across the country, there was an average of 2.3 QMIs per community in April, up 22% from the 1.9 this time last year but down 9.0% from the 2022 peak of 2.5.

“New home sales have been choppy to start the year but remain above 2019 levels,” said Ali Wolf, chief economist for Zonda and NewHomeSource. “Today’s sale volume levels are fueled by the fact that builders are motivated sellers, though. Builders continue to offer incentives to drive sales, but we’re seeing price cuts play a larger role in some areas."
