Reporting to the Supervisory Forensic Scientist, the Forensic Scientist encompasses three distinct yet closely related roles: Forensic Chemist, Forensic Scientist, and Crime Scene Investigator (CSI).

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacology, or a related physical or natural science. A Master’s degree or higher is preferred.

Experience: At least 1-4 years of experience in forensic science, crime scene investigation, or a related field. Previous experience in law enforcement or forensic laboratory settings is preferred.

License & Certification: A valid vehicle operator’s license with a satisfactory driving record in accordance with City Policy is required. Certification as a State Chemist for the analysis of controlled dangerous substances by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; Certification through a recognized body (International Association for Identification, American Board of Criminalistics, or equivalent; Authorization by WMRCL to perform laboratory analysis.

Essential Functions: Examples of duties may include but are not limited to: Within 24 months, become authorized to perform casework in multiple forensic disciplines, such as friction ridge processing, firearm operability, serial number restoration, and crime scene processing; Ensure the proper collections, handling, and labeling of evidence to maintain the integrity and ensure a complete chain of custody; Maintain detailed and accurate records of all laboratory procedures, results, and findings. Prepare written reports of laboratory findings in a clear, concise, and thorough manner; other duties as assigned.
