Those who have experienced design-build done right can attest to the value proposition of the delivery model. They will also likely attest to the noticeable increased collaboration, enhanced coordination, and greater document development required by design-build compared to traditional delivery. These areas of focus are fundamental to the design-build process and require significantly more effort from the design team compared a design-only standard of care.

It can be challenging though for design consulting firms to meet the high expectations of the design-build process while receiving the right fees to fund the resources required to provide this level of service. Commonly, design consultants are asked to provide design-only market rate fees yet are expected to deliver on the greater design-build level of effort (an exception being three-party agreements which provide a framework for fees to be established commensurate to the expected level of effort and risk).

This webinar will offer a discussion on the conditions of the consulting business model that make it challenging to align fees with the design-build level of service as well as suggest alternative approaches to improve the alignment. Data and examples of smart risk sharing, whole project thinking, and owner education on the need and value of increased design team participation will be offered.

This is a conversation important not only for the design community but all stakeholders within the project delivery process. The design team may be the creators of the project information but owners and contractors are the end users who rely up on it. Ensuring incentives are aligned across the entire team to create high quality, coordinated information is to the benefit of all involved.

Julian is focused on improving how buildings are designed and constructed. With a degree in Design/Construction Integration from Stanford University and over 15 years of project management experience, his focus is on the transformations that occur when barriers of traditional project delivery are removed and replaced with integrated delivery models. Julian is based in Denver, CO and has led several large design-build projects for Beck including the 1401 Lawrence Office tower as well as the 15th & Stout Dual Brand Hotel.

Rick Del Monte, FAIA, DBIA, Managing Director, The Beck Group
A Managing Director of The Beck Group, Rick has more than thirty years of experience in building design, nine of which were spent with Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates in New York as an Associate Partner. He was responsible for the design of the world’s tallest concrete building and has won national and international design competitions. He is immediate past board Chair for the DBIA, and has lectured widely on design build and design excellence. As Beck’s National Design Director, Rick works with each team from the concept design through the execution to create innovative buildings that provide a productive work environment for the users.
