Event Description
On March 19, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a new five-year voluntary model called the “Accountable Care Organization Primary Care Flex Model” or ACO PC Flex Model. The focus of the ACO PC Flex Model is to improve outcomes for underserved Medicare populations by increasing access to higher-quality primary care in the Medicare Shared Savings Program. This model will test how prospective payments and increased funding for primary care in ACOs impact health outcomes, quality, and costs of care. The payment design is structured to empower participating ACOs and their primary care providers to use more innovative, team-based, person-centered, and proactive approaches to care. The goals of the model include increasing Medicare beneficiary participation in ACOs and the Shared Savings Program, increasing quality of care while reducing program expenditures, and narrowing disparities in health outcomes. CMS will select 130 ACOs to participate in the Model with a start date of January 1, 2025.
