My Animal is My Heart: The Connection to Companion Animals in Mental Health
Continuing Education Opportunities
Licensed Professional Counselors Association of North Carolina (LPCANC) has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 5807. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Licensed Professional Counselors Association of North Carolina (LPCANC) is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
The workshop is designed to help participants learn:
1) The attachment, as well as the emotional and financial effects, companion animals have on our clients, including during the pandemic
2) How the relationship to companion animals can impact family history, family dynamics, and the schema of family.
3) A better understanding about companion animal/pet loss and other theories of grief beyond Kubler-Ross' Stages of Grief.
A lifelong animal lover, Tracie Barton-Barrett, MS, NCC, LCMHC, is a speaker, former Psychology teacher, and published author of two novels that celebrate the human-animal bond: BURIED DEEP IN OUR HEARTS and FINDING HER SPIRIT. As the recipient of The Excellence in Teaching Award from The National Society of Leadership & Success and her specialty in companion animal loss, Tracie has written and continues to write on the subject. She developed and facilitated companion animal loss support groups for animal shelter and veterinary hospital staff, as well as co-founded and co-facilitated a support group for North Carolina State University Veterinary Hospital clients. She also traveled nationally to co-facilitate workshops on compassion fatigue for animal shelter staff and animal control officers. Tracie, and her husband are owned by their sweet and vocal cat, Oliver Monkey.
