Treating canine pyoderma in the age of antimicrobial resistance

This presentation will cover the diagnosis and management of canine pyoderma, including recognition of common clinical presentations, use of cytology and culture, and identification of underlying causes. Participants will also gain an understanding of antimicrobial stewardship principles in dermatology and learn to select appropriate treatment strategies.

Presented by: Dr. Clarissa Souza, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVD

Dr. Clarissa Souza graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 2001, at her home country Brazil. Then completed a Dermatology internship, a masters and a PhD degrees. Until 2014, Dr. Souza worked as a clinician focusing on dermatology at a private practice and as a professor, while still doing externships abroad to improve her knowledge and skills. In 2014 she started a Dermatology fellowship at the University of Minnesota, and in the following year a Dermatology residency combined with a master program at Colorado State University. She subsequently became boarded by the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (DACVD). In 2018, Dr. Souza joined the Dermatology and Otology Service at the University of Illinois as a professor. Her main research interests as a clinician-scientist are ear diseases, allergies and antimicrobial stewardship in small animals.
