“We’re the Newsroom for the Wilderness” -Craig Childs, Author Alamogordo, New Mexico— Mountainfilm festival, held annually over Memorial Day weekend each year, focuses on documentaries exploring a plethora of different social and environmental themes. Using the power of film, art and ideas, Mountainfilm inspires audiences to create a better world. Sundance Film Festival was formed in 1978 and Mountainfilm was formed in 1979 making it one of the oldest festivals of its specific type. Event-based in Telluride, CO, this festival very recently became an Academy Award® Qualifying Festival for the Documentary Short Film category, a designation announced in October 2024. This means the winning films can now be eligible for an Oscar nomination, boosting filmmakers' opportunities. This prestigious status highlights the festival's growing importance in showcasing powerful and impactful stories about adventure, activism, and the human spirit, solidifying its role in the film industry in conjunction with its long history since that initial formation in 1979. For the last five years (roughly 2021-2025), Mountainfilm in Telluride has honored films like Sugarcane, Greener Pastures, Minding the Gap, and newer award winners announced in May 2025 such as Nobody Against Putin (Best Doc Feature) and Tessitura (Best Short), reflecting their focus on social and environmental justice documentaries featuring varied categories for adventure, student, and Indigenous stories, alongside major festival recognition. Please make plans to attend this event and support the independent projects and filmmakers that will be featured through their lens and platforms. It promises to be an up-lifting experience that will entertain and inspire its audience here in our community.
