Safety/Special Services
Description:
To provide the Pennsylvania Council of Chief Juvenile Probation Officers best practices for the implementation of an effective safety program, as well as to address all safety related concerns and issues for juvenile probation officers throughout the Commonwealth.
Details:
Since the turn of the century the realities of a juvenile probation officer’s safety has become
more prevalent and somewhat common place, nationally and in the Commonwealth. As a result, many
juvenile probation departments throughout the Commonwealth had to either pause to evaluate their
existing safety program or consider taking the necessary step forward in creating their very first safety
program for the future safety of their staff. Creating a safety program or enhancing an existing program
is a difficult task both fiscally and developmentally but is critically important. In January 2010, a new
Safety Committee for the PA Council of Chief Juvenile Probation Officers was formed and took the
leadership to collectively evaluate current statewide juvenile probation officer safety practices. The
effort resulted in the creation of a comprehensive and user friendly statewide “Best Practices” officer
safety resource and informational guide via the Pa Council of Chief Juvenile Probation Officers website.
Dates/Times:
This committee has Juvenile and Adult Probation representatives and typically meets 10 out of 12 months of a year in State College. Meetings are held in person and virtually.
