MWEA Loses a Great FriendMWEA Loses a Great Friend John R. Porter, P.E. passed away on November 30, 2009, after a courageous two-year battle with brain cancer. John was a Senior Process Engineer at Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber, Inc. and one of the founding members of the firm’s Farmington Hills office. John, a proud Hawkeye, attended the University of Iowa where he earned a B.S. Degree in Microbiology and M.S. Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering. John also participated in post-graduate work in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering at the University of Michigan. With over 20 years of wastewater treatment experience, John’s expertise benefitted many municipal and industrial clients. His specialties included activated sludge process design and troubleshooting, biological nutrient removal, computer simulation of wastewater treatment processes, as well as anaerobic and lagoon treatment. John candidly shared his expertise through numerous papers, presentations, and training at events for wastewater professionals. A registered Professional Engineer in Michigan and Ohio, John was a member of the Michigan Water Environment Association (MWEA), and served as chair of the Onsite Wastewater Committee; Water Environment Federation; Michigan Society of Professional Engineers; National Society of Professional Engineers; Ohio Water Environment Association, Government Affairs Committee; and John was highly respected by his peers and, in 2008, was awarded the MWEA Outstanding Environmental Engineer Award. John was a mentor and role model to many, and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Anne, and sons, Tim and Evan. An environmental engineering scholarship fund is being established in John’s memory at the University of Iowa.
