Health Science Education in Indiana - Update

Common Core Literacy Standards

On Friday, March 4, 2011 a memo titled Kindergarten Common Core State Standards Implementation and Grades 1-12 Update was sent to Superintendents and Principals. In this memo it states “ALL” teachers will begin teaching the Common Core Literacy Standards for their disciplines during the 2011-12 school year. Resources and training information will follow.” At this time, the Division of College and Career Preparation is developing training for our CTE teachers in each content area and will start offering this training in the next few months.

For Health Science Education, the Common Core Literacy Standards that must be taught in our courses are the “Common Core Literacy Standards for Technical Subjects.” These standards require that CTE technical subject teachers teach Reading and Writing specific to their content.

Upcoming Professional Development Opportunity

On Friday, June 17 Starla Ewan, Medical Science Instructor from Luboock, TX will be conducting a professional development training for all Health Science teachers throughout the state. I have listed the specific details of this training below:

Workshop title: Students are not pets, but they are trainable!’

Instructors will receive and participate in classroom techniques that prevent common problems and reduce the chance of larger behavior problems that can damage the teacher-student relationship, decreasing success in the classroom and loss of instruction time. These easy to use techniques help instructors to build positive relationships and guide them to be effective and efficient in delivering content to their students which creates a more successful learning environment and program.
