The Thistle 8 Ball help kick off the 2016 season at the Indianapolis Sailing Club in great style. 16 Thistles and crews from across the region came to race on Geist Reservoir. The weather gave us great sun, and warm temps - something we had not seen since opening the club on April 2nd. The winds could have been a little better though. Racing Saturday was held in Easterly winds ranging from 2 to 10 knots. On Geist, Easterlies almost always come with big directional shifts. The race committee, Cliff Browning and crew did a great job of managing the conditions, getting 4 races in under the challenging conditions.
All afternoon racing was tight. Regatta winner Tom Hubbell, with crew Kathy Buckenmeyer, and Warren Duckworth showed an uncanny ability to read the shifts and setup in just the right spot. Winning 3 out of the 4 races, and a second, they were the most consistent of the afternoon. The 2nd place boat, Andy McDonald with Mark Makielski were right in there with team Hubbell. Local knowledge prevailed in a close second race, with McDonald giving Hubble his only loss on the day. Jon Duffett with crew Christina Perlick and Tanya Cuprak beat out Steve Lavender for a close fought third place by the end of the day.
Rachel Lavender risked her dignity in race 4, and put on the helmet cam for a ride along video. They sailed a smart race and got a third. You can watch their efforts and learn from a great team. Check out the video, and be sure to turn up the audio so you can hear the advice she gives Steve.
After racing, everyone retired to the clubhouse for a great bbq dinner, and visited on the deck as the sun went down. A perfect way to end the day.
Racing was suspended Sunday morning due to no winds. So the 8 Ball, turned out to be a 4 Ball, but everyone still had a great time. But that’s easy to do when you are hanging out with a great group of racers. Sandy Rapp came to race with Bill and Barb Perley. The last time Sandy raced at the 8 Ball, it was 1982, and he won the event. Former Michiana District Governor Martin James took advantage of the awards ceremony to hand out two district trophies. The 2015 Traveller Series went to Andy McDonald, and the Long Distance Traveller award went to our current District Governor, Mark Udell and his crew John Hutt.
A special shout out goes to all the hard working Fleet 69 members who helped make this event a success! Hunter Dyar for setting up dinner, Paul Dovey, for registration, brothers David and Harry Atkinson for pre-dinner snacks and drinks, and Eric Guion for the all important coffee and doughnuts on Sunday morning. Claire Guion with all the Twitter and Instagram posts leading up to the event. That really helped us get the word out.
