MI-AHEAD members Adam Meyer (Eastern Michigan University) and Randall Ward (Lake Michigan College) are two of approximately 20 national higher education disability service providers who are participating in a three year Department of Education grant project entitled Project ShIFT (Shaping Inclusion through Foundational Transformation). The purpose of the grant is to get disability providers to think about the implications of the following in their work:
• Social welfare vs. social justice;
• Medical model of disability vs. social model of disability;
• Basic concepts found within the disability studies field;
• The barriers we as a DS field create for students with disabilities through our “traditional” practices;
• The power of language and what it says to students and to the campus community.
The ultimate goal is for the involved disability offices to create a campus resource that both talks and walks inclusive practices. Through implementation of the ShIFT philosophy, disability resource coordinators are making changes, sometimes radical, to DS offices in these areas:
• Department Name
• Department Slogan
• Vision and Mission Statement
• Web Site
• Eligibility Guidelines
• Job descriptions
• Language of accommodation letter
• Accommodation letter process
• Syllabus Statement
• Publications and brochures
• Service delivery practices (rules and policies)
• Workshops and programs
• Physical Space
The October 15th conference will not be a typical workshop where information is simply relayed to participants. A progressive philosophical model for shifted service delivery will be shared. Those in attendance will have ample opportunity for large and small group discussion. Participants will then have an opportunity to think about how to take the philosophy and implement it in concrete ways on campus. Attendees are asked to bring copies of vision and mission statements, documentation eligibility requirements, syllabus statements, and accommodation letters and processes to the workshop for review against the ShIFT model.
