Artist Statement

My art is tied to color. In my work I play with the iconic objects that lie in fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and children?s toys. These objects are from childhood, a time gone, one that will never be the same for any child in the future. The messages are not always playful, but the significance of the objects that play in the compositions are important.

At times, nonrepresentational objects are central to my work. The composition is drawn from non-representational shapes and or iconic symbols. Both types of objects float in my head. Both, tell stories.

Shape consistently directs the composition as well as the use of color. Each color is thought through before it is placed on the surface. How the color react to those colors beside it and those around it, is strongly considered. Sometimes the color I am going to use will surface from a book, a magazine, a photo, or postcard. I?m never sure where the color will appear.

There is a calmness that comes over me as I begin to paint. Shape, and colors flood my thoughts. They are the stuff that directs me.
