Artist Statement

My oil painting technique consists of, but is not limited to, layering transparent glazes of pigment and medium onto a surface and allowing each glaze to dry before repeating the process. To create collages, I use paper cut-outs, foil, and mixed media such as oil, acrylic, ink, pen and watercolour. I combine wet and dry techniques in my watercolour paintings.

Different subjects inform my work, which include realistic and abstracted forms. Although my portraits and nature paintings reflect my most realistic work, most of my art has been described as atmospheric and often surreal. I believe that this flows from the personal picture-making techniques that I have used and tried to develop.

At present, I try to represent my environment as best as possible in my life and my work. More and more, I see this type of, often naïve, honesty feed my art, help me conceptualise, and remain creative.

Puja lives in Scottsdale, Arizona. After several years spent in New York to study art, she returned to live in New Delhi, where she is originally from. Given their cultural and geographical diversity, the time she has lived in each place has had significant relevance to to her art.
After her graduate studies at Columbia University, Puja studied at the Art Students League in New York. She spent her initial years as an artist using poster art to create a series of collages in mixed, and new media. Once in New Delhi, she continued her practice in oil and watercolour painting. She has been a part of several solo and group shows in the last decade.
