04/27/18Coastal Development Induced Sediment Plume Impacts
During this one-day seminar, we will focus on coastal development activities that cause sediment plumes, the physiochemical factors that determine their behavior, and associated impacts on marine and coastal environments. We'll also discuss methods to sustainably manage impacts during design and implementation. Free admission for students / faculty, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations! Coastal areas in tropical and temperate environments entail diverse receptors sensitive to mobilized sediments and sediment deposition. Dredge and reclamation projects are well-known causes but there are a variety of coastal development activities that can also generate sediment plumes. Estuarine, sea grass, coral reef habitats, and certain flora and fauna that inhabit them are among the ecological receptors especially vulnerable to changes in suspended sediment concentrations and patterns of sedimentation. Similar susceptibilities are also evident for various socio- economic or socio-cultural receptors, such as fisheries (e.g. aquaculture), port berthing facilities, and industrial or drinking water intakes. Insufficient understanding of sediment plume dynamics and mitigation options can lead to misaligned construction planning, permitting issues, inappropriate mitigation responses, and ultimately unacceptable environmental impacts. This course aims at providing a comprehensive introduction to sediment plumes characteristics and the means to optimally manage them for both construction efficiency and environmental sustainability.
