The English, Communication, Theater, and Journalism Department of Harry S Truman College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, seeks a tenure-track faculty member to teach academic English as a Second Language (ESL) reading and writing courses effective fall 2026. The position entails a 12-credit-hour per semester teaching load, service to department and college committees, and participation in a rigorous three-year tenure process. The ideal candidate will bring initiative, innovation, flexibility and leadership to the continuous improvement of the department’s instruction in ESL. In addition, the ideal candidate will successfully develop and use effective teaching strategies to meet students’ diverse needs and engage them in critical thinking and problem-solving. Candidates are expected to be committed to the open-access mission of community colleges and to demonstrate strong skills in collaborating with colleagues and incorporating technology into teaching approaches.



PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching

Instruct High Intermediate and Advanced ESL integrated reading and writing course offerings, which prepare students for college-level first-year composition (English 101)

Instruct linguistics courses as needed

Demonstrate proficiency and professional currency in teaching (at the community college level preferred) and in using inclusive pedagogical approaches that respond to the needs of first-generation college students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and academic backgrounds

Prepare, deliver, and evaluate clear and effective instructional materials and assignments aligned with student learning outcomes and provide feedback responsive to the needs and interests of diverse populations, promoting long-term growth and improvement

Cultivate a safe environment that respects the diversity of individuals and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn

Help student reach their academic, personal, and career goals by including diverse interdisciplinary content in the classroom that engages students and encourages them to be motivated self-learners

· Engage in reflective practice with the goal of improving course materials, classroom assessment techniques, and delivery



Curriculum and Assessment

Collaborate with departmental committees

to select and develop course materials, textbooks, and other educational resources that meet the course objectives

to develop both classroom and programmatic assessment methods in support of student learning outcomes

Measure student success through a variety of formative and summative assessment tools (e.g., classroom assessment techniques, rubrics, peer evaluations, portfolios)

· Participate in the departmental portfolio assessment process

· Participate in the scoring of placement tests



Technology

· Demonstrate competence with current teaching technologies and a willingness to learn how to enhance classroom instruction using the college’s learning management system tools

· Demonstrate competence with other technologies used in teaching or service work and a willingness to learn new college systems (e.g. platforms used for creating syllabi, checking student work for plagiarism, sharing files).

· Post syllabi and grades on the learning management system and use institutional platforms to communicate with students and advisors

· Develop a robust philosophy surrounding the use of generative AI in the writing classroom that promotes original student writing and authentic measurement of student learning objectives



Department and College Service

· Participate in the Tenure Assistance Program curriculum designed for tenure-track faculty (more information available at www.ccc.edu/tenure)

· Mentor and conduct classroom evaluations of adjunct faculty

· Maintain office hours for advising, mentoring, and coaching students

· Work collaboratively with fellow departmental faculty and staff and participate in departmental activities related to setting policies, maintaining master syllabi, and reviewing programs

· Take initiative in submitting midterm and final grades, departmental and college reports, and responses to email in a timely fashion

· Participate in professional or shared governance committees

· Engage with and advocate for students in classroom and non-classroom settings

· Adhere to City Colleges of Chicago board rules, policies, procedures, and code of ethics

Qualifications:
MA in TEFL/TESL/TESOL or MA Linguistics/Applied Linguistics. M.Ed. with a specialization in ESL/Bilingual Education and ISBE ESL endorsement with five or more years of experience may be considered. Master's degree in an adjacent field plus 15 graduate credit hours in any of the degrees listed above may be considered.

Demonstrated experience in effectively teaching academic reading and composition to speakers of other languages, including using and assessing student learning outcomes; developing student-centered pedagogy based on current best practices; and incorporating technology into teaching approaches to enhance student learning

Two years of teaching experience, preferably at the community college level

Theory of and practice in writing process, critical thinking and study strategies, and developmental writing and reading in the second/foreign language classroom

Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with department colleagues and members of the college community

Experience with a diverse, multilingual student population, including neuro-diverse learners, and a commitment to the open-access mission of the community college

Demonstrated initiative and skill in managing time-sensitive professional projects, group work, and deadlines

A growth mindset and proactive inclination to seek out and participate in professional development opportunities

Salary Range is $58,000.00 - $65,000.00

Offered salary will be determined by the respective collective bargaining agreement and applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.
