Position Overview:
Under direct supervision of the Assistant Superintendent, the Operator monitors and adjusts plant
operations and equipment as needed to ensure the effective operation of the WWTP, performs various
maintenance and janitorial duties, and performs duties of other plant personnel as needed to ensure the
effective operations of the WWTP. May also include operation of the filter belt press. The Operator
operates a tow motor, pumps/hoses, sampling and lab equipment, computers and system controls, various
hand and power tools involved in cleaning, maintenance and grounds care, and operates a snow plow
truck as needed. The work is performed in an industrial setting involving regular exposure to unpleasant
odors and fumes, potential exposure to excessive temperatures, humidity and noise, and is also routinely
performed in an outside setting involving potential exposure to inclement weather and pathogens.
Duties:
1. Plant and Equipment Operation 55%
Conducts routine inspections of plant equipment and operations to ensure and maintain proper
degree of treatment*
o Inspects internal and external plant equipment and processes by touring facility and
grounds to observe operation of pumps, motors, gates, seals, timers, graphs, charts and
gauges
o Analyzes treatment readings and laboratory tests to results to ensure data indicates
effective treatment and operation
o Determines site and causes of malfunctions and takes corrective measures; makes
operational adjustments as needed
o Records readings of instruments, analyses and readings of dials on equipment
o Extracts and collects water and waste samples for laboratory tests and performs routine
analysis on samples
o Adjusts chemical feeds as needed for special operating conditions
o Adjusts plant operations as needed to sustain high flows during extreme weather changes
o Communicates with plant personnel regarding plant conditions
o Monitors plant SCADA system and makes adjustments as required*
Notifies appropriate personnel of repair and maintenance needs; assists in repairs as needed*
Receives deliveries of supplies and equipment; places supplies/equipment in proper
place/positions
Performs their duties in a responsible and professional manner consistent with
standard operating procedures and best management practices;*
Operates and maintains treatment works, and appurtenances so as not to endanger the health or
safety of persons working in or around the facility, the public at large, or the environment due to
negligence or incompetence;*
Report all instances of noncompliance with applicable regulations to the professional operator of
record or facility supervisor
2. Maintenance and Cleaning 40%
Performs maintenance and cleaning of WWTP facilities and equipment including but not limited
to:*
o Cleans and flushes pumps, gates and equipment; drains valves; collects and disposes of debris
o Collects and disposes of trash
o Hoses, sweeps and mops floors
o Washes windows and doors
o Washes and cleans vehicles, tools and equipment
Performs routine and preventative maintenance internal and external to the WWTP facility
including but not limited to:*
o Paints interior of facility including equipment and building
Performs various lawn care duties and maintenance including but not limited to:
o Cuts and trims grass, weeds, trees, bushes and brush
o Shovels snow and ice from walkways and driveways; operates snow plow and salts walkways
o Sweeps curbs and walks
o Operates various power and hand tools to perform routine lawn care and maintenance duties
3. Miscellaneous 5%
Performs duties of other plant personnel as needed to ensure effective operations of the plant*
Performs various miscellaneous duties as assigned or needed including errands as directed;
operates City vehicle as needed*
Attends various training seminars and classes as needed to maintain current job knowledge and
skills*

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
A high school education
All new employees of the WWTP must be licensed through the State of Ohio Environmental
Protection Agency within 30 months of date of hire.
