The Civil Service Office is now accepting applications for the position of Sewer/Drainage Technician in the Public Service Department. This examination is open for consideration to the general public and to all City of Zanesville employees.



Qualifications:
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: High School Degree, GED or equivalent, knowledge of storm/sanitary sewer systems, concrete and mortar and two years experience in wastewater works.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Class A restricted State of Ohio Commercial Drivers License in possession or enrolled.
DISTINGUISHING JOB CHARACTERISTICS
Under supervision of Sewer Maintenance Supervisor, performs all duties required inbuilding, installation, and repair of storm sewer catch basins, manholes, sidewalks, and driveway entrances. Assists sewer crews in maintaining City’s sanitary, combined and storm sewer infrastructures. Must possess the ability to operate a laser level, and GPS unit. Works with engineering and construction personnel in the Ohio EPA Storm Water Management Plan.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Reasonable accommodations will be made for disabled persons, covered by the Americans With Disabilities Act, in accordance with its requirements.
Performs major and minor concrete/and or masonry work on storm and sanitary sewer fixtures. Replaces sidewalk and driveway entrances. Assists in the Ohio EPA Storm Water Management Plan requirements. Logs data from GPS coordinates.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs
all
duties as assigned by Sewer Maintenance Supervisor.

SCOPE OF SUPERVISION
Maintenance personnel, seasonal employees, college interns.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED
Mechanical tools, electrical and air hand tools, tanker truck, Vac truck, pickup truck, backhoe, loader, bucket machine, computers, concrete mixer, laser level, jackhammer, pipe saw, GPS unit.

CONTACTS WITH OTHERS
General public, regulatory officials, engineers, contractors.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Intermittent exposure to heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, chemicals, and inclement weather. Will often work in confined spaces. The employee must use standard safety precautions due to exposure to bacteria, and exposure to injury from the operation of, and working around, equipment. Exposure to traffic while working on or near City streets.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:
municipal and industrial wastewater processes, sanitary sewer system maintenance methods; equipment, tools and materials utilized; wastewater laws and regulations, work hazards and safety practices.
Ability to:
define work and resolve work project problems; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, engineers, general public, industrial users and regulatory officials. Understand and follow instructions; perform
outdoor work for extended periods of time under varying and possibly adverse weather conditions; lift and move heavy objects.
Skill in:
operating computers; interpret mapping and drawings, job equipment and tools, masonry work and maintain records.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The civil service exam for Sewer/Drainage Technician will consist of a written exam and a skills test. Applicants must attain a passing score of 70% on the written exam to proceed to skills portion. Applicants must pass both sections of the exam. Passing score of 70% on written examination will be weighted at 40%;60% of attained points on the skills examination. Score plus any earned seniority points will determine your rank on eligible list.
