The City of Lakewood is currently seeking a Chief Mechanic in its Public Works Department, Wastewater Treatment Plant. This is a full-time, AFSCME Bargaining Unit position with an hourly rate of $29.74 – 32.74. Normal working hours are M–F 7:30am – 4:00pm

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

ELECTRICAL: Must be proficient with 3 phase, 480V in an industrial setting; must be able to install, test, maintain, troubleshoot & repair electrical wiring, fixtures, control devices & equipment; must be proficient with 480V, 220/240V, and 120V single phase equipment; must be able to install , align & maintain electric motors up to 200 hp; must be able to diagnose, locate cause & repair electrical malfunctions to systems and components; must be able to perform preventive maintenance on electrical systems such as MCC’s, generator transfer switches, motors & motor controls; must have ability to install, troubleshoot and repair PLCs and components; must have an ability to install, program & troubleshoot VFDs; must be able to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, electrical code specifications & schematics; must be proficient in the use of amp meters, process meters, mag meters & multimeters; must be familiar with local, state & federal electrical codes; must be able to diagnose older electrical systems & bring them up to current electrical code standards; must understand and interpret latest NEC; must understand and follow LOTO procedures & electrical safety procedures; must maintain accurate maintenance records either in written or electronic format; must be able to safely operate a forklift & high lift; must be able to lift 50 - 75 pounds above the head, be able to work from ladders & work platforms with the ability to work for long periods of time overhead as well as while bending or stooping; must have adequate eyesight & be able to pass the red/green color eye test; must be able to communicate from a distance, have good agility, sense of balance/coordination & hand/eye coordination; must have ability to work in a team atmosphere with other members of the facility’s maintenance and operations units;

MECHANICAL: must be able to repair/rebuild centrifugal & positive displacement pumps; must have the ability to use all types of manual and power operated hand tools; must have the ability to diagnose and repair all types of mechanical defects; must be able to repair and replace all types of bearings, couplers, mechanical seals and packings; must have the ability to install new and replacement process equipment; must have the ability to perform general carpentry and concrete fabrication and repairs.;

MACHINING: Must be able to set up and operate lathes and milling machines; must be able to use measuring devices such as calipers and micrometers.

PLUMBING: Must be proficient in the installation and repairing of plumbing using copper, galvanized, black, stainless steel, PVC and ductile piping up to 24” in diameter.

WELDING: Must have the ability to use gas, arc and mig welders and plasma cutting equipment.

HVAC: must have the ability to maintain and troubleshoot the methane fired boilers, including their control systems; must be able to maintain and troubleshoot electric boilers and water heaters; must be able to troubleshoot rooftop units and air handlers.

FABRICATION: must have the ability to work from sketches, blueprints, and oral instructions; must have the ability to fabricate pump shafts and shaft sleeves; must have the ability to fabricate control panels using electrical, electronic, mechanical, and machining skills.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: must be able to work in tanks, pits and wells while observing proper safety measures; must be able to work around chemicals and chemical feed systems; must be able to work with daily exposure to heat, dust, pungent odors, and fumes; must be able to periodically lift weights up to 75 lbs.; must be able to work off ladders and work platforms.

PARTS/EQUIPMENT ORDERING: must have the ability to research and order parts and equipment utilizing proper City purchasing guidelines; must be able to communicate with vendors and manufacturer representatives of the various equipment used throughout the facility; must have the ability to assist management with capital equipment specification development.

RECORDKEEPING: must have the ability to keep neat and accurate records including but not limited to the following: supplies ordered and used, personnel and time utilized in performing specific tasks; must have the ability to enter maintenance data utilizing computerized software.

SAFETY: must be able to run and maintain a safe maintenance work environment in accordance with OSHA standards; must ensure that all maintenance tasks are performed using proper equipment and safety standards; must ensure that all facility equipment and tools have required operational safeguards installed and operational.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Employee may be required to work overtime pursuant to the provisions of Article 5 and Article 15 of the current negotiated agreement. Applicants may be reassigned as required.




Qualifications:
High school graduate or GED equivalent.
Must have documented industrial/commercial electrical experience.
Must have an associate or equivalent degree in electrical/electronic field.
Must have 5 years of documentable full-time experience working in an industrial and commercial atmosphere.
Must be able to work independently with little to no supervision.
Must understand and follow LOTO procedure.
Must understand and interpret the latest NEC.
Must possess Class I OEPA Wastewater Operators Certification or obtain Class I OEPA Wastewater Operators Certification within 36 months of appointment. Present and former WWTP employees will have their remaining number of original months to obtain certification.
Must have a valid Ohio Driver's License with less than eight (8) points.
Must satisfactorily complete hands on and written skills tests at the discretion of the City as required.
Must satisfactorily complete a physical examination and police background investigation.
