Heritage Bank has an exciting opportunity to join our organization! We are seeking an Assistant Controller at our Southern Operations Center in Tacoma, WA. The Assistant Controller is responsible for the oversight and supervision of the day-to-day performance and operation of the accounting department including the accounts payable, financial and accounting functions and team members. Ensures accounting activities are in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, legal and regulatory requirements and departmental procedures.

The successful candidate will be able to:
•Manage accounting functions including general ledger maintenance, loan/deposit accounting, investment accounting, accounts payable, fixed assets, prepaid and accrued expenses, and equity accounting as well as associated analysis and reporting.
•Ensure maintenance of effective internal controls and appropriate accounting policies and procedures for the areas of responsibility, including evaluation of processes and controls for compliance with SOX.
•Analyze department job functions and make suggestions for streamlining functions, improving efficiency and enhancing the accuracy and quality of work. •Organizes workflow of staff to ensure most efficient use of resources and required deadlines/commitments are met.
•Provide direct reports with proper tools and authority to execute their assigned functions and develops skills of staff through goal-setting, coaching, problem resolution, delegation, training, counseling, and performance management.
•Oversee timely closing of books including but not limited to accounting for accruals, fixed assets and prepaid expenses, purchase accounting expenses, and consolidations.
•Provide support, guidance, and problem-solving assistance to all branches and cost centers, as requested.
•Prepare and/or reviews general ledger entries and reconciliations.
•Analyze accounting transactions to determine the appropriate accounting treatment in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
•Monitor accounts payable for accuracy of reporting and ensure that expenses are recorded in the correct time period.
•Maintain proficient knowledge of, and ensures bank activities are performed in compliance with, all state and federal banking laws and regulations applicable to assigned area of oversight.
•Assist management in various projects, aides in internal and external audits, and trouble shoots department related issues.
•Responsible for preparation of quarterly call report and other regulatory filings.
•Responsible for all local, state and federal tax filings.
•Work collaboratively with manager and Human Resources to recommend staffing levels and approves personnel actions such as hiring, terminations, promotions, transfers, training and development of staff, timely performance reviews and salary increases, in accordance with legal and acceptable Bank personnel practices.

Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business with an emphasis in Accounting, or a related field - required.
•5 years’ progressively responsible and recent experience in accounting, which includes a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory and/or management role in a financial institution and/or financial services industry - required.
•Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation desired. Candidates currently in the process of obtaining either certification will be considered depending on experience.
•Equivalent combination of education, certifications and/or relevant experience in all aspects of accounting/finance in a leadership role may be considered.
•Provides an exceptional level of quality service for internal/external customers; responds to customers' needs, questions and concerns in an accurate, effective, and timely manner.
•Strong listening, verbal and written business communication skills, including ability to communicate effectively, clearly and persuasively in a variety of settings, formats, and audiences across business lines at all levels; with the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English well.
•Strong leadership and managerial skills are required to manage, motivate, and develop teams, to include oversight and management of employees in remote locations. Employee development, performance management, training and employee counseling skills required.
•Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, organizational, data review and time management skills, with the ability to accurately manage multiple assignments, goals, reporting requests and staffing schedules, ensuring priorities are set and commitments and deadlines are met, with minimal oversight and direction.
•Strong quantitative and analytical skills are required to analyze statistical information, demonstrating proficiency performing data analysis to support business decisions through financial modeling, graphical presentation, and analytical writing.
•Exceptional knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Thoroughly understands and applies principles, procedures, compliance requirements, state/federal regulations, and policies related to assigned area of oversight.
•Unquestionable integrity in handling sensitive and confidential information required.
•Proficient use and understanding of MS Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook), with the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies quickly.
•Experience and working knowledge using Concur or similar accounts payable systems required.
•Experience and working knowledge using Fiserv Prologue general ledger software or similar general ledger software required.

•Climate controlled office environment.
•Work involves being able to concentrate on the matter at hand, under sometimes distracting work conditions and frequent employee and customer contacts and interruptions during the day.
•Work requires regular attendance, punctuality and adherence to agreed-upon schedule with willingness to work a flexible and/or rotating schedule and or extended hours, and assist at other locations or remotely, as needed.

Physical Demands:

•Work may involve the constant use of computer screens, reading of reports, and sitting throughout the day.
•Ability to operate a computer keyboard, multi-line telephone, photocopier, scanner and facsimile which often requires dexterity of hands and fingers with repetitive wrist and hand motion.
•Typically sitting at a desk or table; intermittently standing, stooping, bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to file materials.
•Occasional Lifting and/or moving up to 10 lbs (files, boxes, etc.)
