JOB SUMMARY: Performs technical field and laboratory work related to sampling and testing water, wastewater, sludge and/or soils; Prepares and maintains records and reports; performs routine laboratory analyses, industrial surveillance and sludge programs; Performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.)
- Prepares standard solutions and reagents.
- Collects water and/or wastewater samples on a scheduled basis.
- Prepares samples prior to analysis.
- Conducts sampling and measurements of water and/or wastewater samples, soils, and sludge using standard methods and techniques.
- Conducts field measurements of flow and other physical and/or chemical parameters.
- Performs routine chemical and bacteriological analyses of water and/or wastewater.
- Conducts and interprets specialized laboratory analyses.
- Prepares test records, sampling containers, charts, reports and statistical analyses.
- Maintains sampling data and field analysis records.
- Performs instrumental analysis of water and/or wastewater in coordination with chemist or other senior employee.
- Sets up and performs routine maintenance and troubleshooting of all laboratory equipment, apparatus, sampling and flow meter equipment.
- Assists in research and analysis of wastewater treatment/water pumping techniques and practices.
- Communicate lab test results to operations staff so they can make appropriate adjustments, if necessary for proper operation of the plant.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Expected to perform the following or it is a critical part of the position: Lifting (0-50 lbs.), reaching, grasping, holding, reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth), using the telephone and working inside and outside.
ENVIRONMENT: Working around machinery, chemicals, and wastewater and its byproducts.


Qualifications:
-Graduation from high school or high school equivalency with courses in science and chemistry.
- Minimum two (2) years of college course work in chemistry with related laboratory training (prefer completion of core curriculum for Baccalaureate level minor in chemistry, biology or a related field).
- One (1) year experience as a laboratory technician or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities for the position.
- Possess a valid driver's license.
- Thorough knowledge of routine analytical chemistry as it applies to drinking water and wastewater treatment.
- Ability to prepare accurate records and technical reports.
- Physical capability of properly collecting samples and maintaining equipment.
- Computer knowledge
- Must pass a job-related test which includes math.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public
