Summary:

Participates in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant. Performs related work as required.


Supervision Received:

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Water Utility Superintendent, and also under the direction of the Wastewater Plant Lead Operator and/or Water Utility Chief Operator.


Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Operates the City wastewater treatment plant:

a. Conducts all laboratory tests and adjusts chemical feed rates as required.

b. Compiles reports, records data regarding plant operations and lab tests.

c. Performs preventative maintenance and repair work on pumps, motors, hydraulic cylinders and electronic equipment; performs yard maintenance as required.

d. Collects samples for lab analysis as needed on site or throughout the system.

e. Operates pumps to move sludge as required.

f. Loads chemicals into feeders when needed.

g. Performs confined space entries as required

h. Rotating weekend overtime and call-in schedule with other operators.

2. Performs any/all related work as required at the wastewater plant or remote pumping stations.

3. On occasion, will be scheduled at the water filtration plant to assist in times of need as deemed necessary by the Water Utility Superintendent or the Water Utility Chief Operator.


Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and/or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to extreme heat and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.


Salary information:

$23.10/hr first 90 days
$25.10/hr after 90 days

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications for Operator Position:

A minimum of an MDEQ Class D Municipal Wastewater Operator’s license.

Required education includes a high school diploma or the equivalent.

A valid Michigan Driver’s License is required

Confined space entry certification within 90 days of appointment is required


Desirable Qualifications for Employment:

Previous experience at the operational level of a wastewater treatment plant.

Associates degree in water purification.

One year of college level courses in chemistry, bacteriology, and related subjects.

Considerable knowledge of waste water treatment plant laboratory procedures and testing protocols.

Knowledge of City sewer system, plant systems, and maintenance/repair of these systems.

Knowledge of the principles of waste water treatment requirements.

Knowledge of basic chemistry and bacteriological principles and procedures as applied to the analysis of waste water.

Background and experience in equipment maintenance and repair.

Salary:
$23.10/hr first 90 days
$25.10/hr after 90 days

The wastewater treatment plant schedule is 7:00AM to 3:30PM Monday through Friday with rotating weekends on overtime with a staff of two operators and a lead operator.
