Under the leadership of the Water Distribution / Sewer Collection Manager in the Water Utilities Department.

Responsibilities include, maintaining the water and sewer distribution systems. Completes a variety of routine and skilled maintenance and repair activities designed to assure smooth operation and expansion of the system. Operates light and heavy equipment and provides general labor in support of a wide range of water and sewer work as operational needs demand. Participates in the installation, maintenance and repair of the water distribution system as well as the sewage conveyance systems.


Qualifications:
• A high school diploma supplemented by additional instruction in construction techniques or the skilled trades.

• Two years of experience in a construction-related field.

• State of Michigan S-4 Water Certification preferred or the ability to obtain the license upon hire. Ability to obtain a State of Michigan S-2 Water Certification within a reasonable amount of time.

• A Michigan class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the endorsements appropriate for the City’s fleet, or the ability to obtain one upon hire.

• Knowledge of safety procedures and precautions involved in water system operation, equipment and vehicle operation and public works maintenance work.

• Knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the maintenance, repair and construction of municipal infrastructure systems, including water and sewer systems.

• Knowledge of maintenance practices associated with water system equipment and machinery.

• Knowledge of the sampling and testing methods and procedures used in water system operations and a basic knowledge of current public health guidelines, government regulations and professional standards for water treatment.

• Skill in manipulating valves and related water system devices.

• Skill in the operation of standard water utility tools and equipment.

• Skill in performing preventive maintenance and basic repairs on general water system equipment, machinery, buildings and facilities.

• Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with other employees and the public.

• Ability to accurately log and record information and complete reports.

• Ability to effectively communicate, understands instructions, and follows directions.

• Ability to work effectively under stress, with changes in work priorities, and in emergency situations.

• Ability to work independently and complete projects according to deadlines.

• Ability to perform a variety of construction, maintenance and repair tasks involving carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and masonry skills.
