It’s an exciting time to be at the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA)! GLWA employs hundreds of technical and administrative staff, all working to ensure effective wastewater treatment and to provide our award-winning drinking water to more than 80 wholesale customers in Michigan.

About the Job
We are looking for an Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator to conduct safety programs and investigates safety concerns to ensure compliance with applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations. This position is also responsible for monitoring policies and procedures to ensure a healthy and safe work environment.



Responsibilities (not all inclusive)

• The Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator conduct safety programs and investigates Safety enforcement accident and safety concerns; submit written reports on incidents involving environmental health and safety matters


•Maintain up-to-date emergency response plans and procedures


•Develop policies and procedures to ensure compliance with environmental health and safety standards


•Conduct safety training classes


•Assist with handling of workers compensation cases and designing programs to control, eliminate and prevent future injuries and/or illnesses


•Develop confined space assessments and audits for water/sewer systems, lockout-tagout assessments, spill prevention plans and safety data sheet updates


•Process Hot work permits, conducts fit-testing, PPE enforcement, ad-hoc safety inspections


•Maintain updated safety posters, provide training, and coordinate with Safety Committees, process safety management audit,


•Update SDS program.


Qualifications:

Required Education & Experience

• Associate’s degree or equivalent coursework; with specialization in environmental or occupational health and safety or a related discipline


•A minimum of five (5) years of experience in assisting with planning and conducting successful safety programs covering a wide variety of occupations and exposures to hazardous work environments




Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• First Aid, CPR, etc.


•Hazards commonly encountered in various occupations and industries and effective safety measures


•Michigan Workers Compensation Law


•Federal and Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA and MIOSHA)


•Standard practices of accident reporting and exposure evaluation


•Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT)


•Municipal building and fire codes


•Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)


•Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ)


•All federal, state, and local regulatory agencies involving water and wastewater


•Root cause and corrective action analysis techniques (5 Why’s, Fishbone Diagrams, etc.)


•Knowledge of negotiation techniques


•Effective safety training programs


•Detect potentially hazardous situations


•Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with employees, union representatives, management personnel, and other safety representatives


•Be observant to hazardous conditions


•Stimulate active interest in safety practices on the part of supervisors and employees


•Effectively deal with supervisors and employees during worker’s compensation cases


•Determine the most effective means of reducing workplace accidents


•Build strong relationships with outside regulatory agencies


•Manage completion of safety corrective actions


•Create trending reports of safety data


•Provide safety training


•Manage contracts and contractors related to safety and health


•Use advanced technology


•Work effectively in a team-based, flexible workforce with minimal supervision


•Recognize and address unsafe conditions and violations


•Represent GLWA effectively when working with regulatory auditors and outside agencies


•Effectively utilize appropriate security and safety equipment and procedures


•Maintain regular and reliable attendance


•Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing


•Understand and follow verbal and written instructions


•Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others


•Communicate frequently with team members and other units across the about process, equipment or potential problems


•Develop proficiency in unit specific operations and software


•Direct team activities or to work as a team member




Other Requirements:

• A valid Michigan Driver’s License and the ability to drive a motor vehicle on all terrain


•Follow security and safety policies and procedures in carrying out work duties


•Provide on the job training for employees
